Weevils on the Rise Again

The alfalfa weevils are right on the heels of this year’s first cutting of alfalfa and alfalfa/mixed grass hay, according to Kevin Carlson, Federated’s agronomy sales manager.
 
He noted that in the past few years, the weevils began feeding in the bud stage, as the alfalfa recovered from harvest. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you have too much time post-harvest.
 
Within a week of harvest, get out and scout those alfalfa fields. Sweep the field with a net to effectively determine weevil infestation levels. The
 
If weevil pressure is heavy, act quickly to avoid yield loss. “Once they do damage, they hurt your tons/bales,” said Sam Johnson, ag sales rep at Federated’s Albertville location.
 
Alfalfa weevils have become resistant to common pesticides, particularly pyrethroids, which means it’s important to rotate insecticides. Steward® EC (by FMC) is a recommended alternative, and generic products are also available.
