Discovery Plot Tours Finish Well
Sep 11, 2024
In spite of stormy weather that delayed the start of the Rush City Discovery Plot tour, this year’s events were well attended and well received.
“There were some interesting things to see in the plots, especially in the soybean plots,” said Kevin Carlson, Federated’s agronomy sales manager.
“We’ve had significantly excessive moisture,” said Carlson. Depending upon the location, this year’s plots saw 50-100% higher than normal rainfall. Consequently, disease showed up throughout the plots.
There were marked differences in the way the soybean varieties responded to the five different diseases evidenced in the plots: Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, brown stem rot, white mold (Sclerotinia stem rot), and sudden death syndrome (SDS).
Nitrogen deficiencies, again relative to excessive rains, were evident in the corn plots.
Thank you to all the growers who participated in the conversations and tours. Federated also offers a special thank you to the cooperators who hosted the events: Tim Holker, Jason Holmstrom, Larry and Sharon Wilhelm, and the Bostrom Family Farm.
Steffen Farms provided another Discovery Plot, which was not part of the hosted events. This plot provides additional planting data, and in particular, data on heavy soils.
Discovery Plot data will be available soon after harvest. Your Federated Agronomist will be glad to help you interpret the data.
