A Mid-Season Check

As we arrive at the mid-point of the season, it’s good to know what your Federated Agronomists see and note across their service areas.

  • The weather has cleared for baling hay, and some crops are being cut for the first time this year!
    • There’s an abundance of hay, thanks to the good moisture this season.
  • There’s plenty of light-green corn, indicating a lack of nitrogen, especially in the wettest areas. The reality: “It is what it is.”
    • Historical trivia: The spring rainfall totals for 2024, in much of Federated’s service area, ranked in the top five for spring rains in the last 130+ years of recordkeeping. (It wasn’t anyone’s imagining that the rain didn’t seem to let up!)
  • Late planted soybeans are small, but still flowering. Not ‘til harvest will we know if the smaller plants yield well.
  • Weed control is good where pre-emerge herbicides were applied. They worked well with the moisture they received.
    • Post-emerge applications are, ideally, “just clean up,” as the Agronomists say.
  • If your corn needs a post-emerge application, it’s “time to get stuff buttoned up,” said Kevin Carlson, Federated’s agronomy sales manager.
  • Soybeans are in R1 to R2, and except for spraying to mitigate white mold, the window for herbicide application is closing fast (based on herbicide labels on products such as Enlist®, Liberty®, and Roundup®).

All in all, the season is progressing well, but connect with your Federated Agronomist on any concerns.
